The Fine and Contemporary Crafts Certificate
Program At The Ottawa School Of Art:

Starting September 2008, I will be teaching the Glass Blowing component of the Ottawa School of Art's (OSA) new crafts program. Here is a brief description. For more info on this certificate, please refer to the school's website.

The Ottawa School of Art Fine and Contemporary Crafts Certificate Program presents qualified students with a unique and exciting educational opportunity. Long overdue in the Ottawa region, this unique mentorship program is being launched during Craft Year 2007 as the school's way of participating in the celebration of historic and future goals of the crafts in Canada. At OSA we promote contemporary and fine crafts as a way of ensuring the highest standards of technical quality backed by a strong individualistic expression of design.

Explore! Create! Study in a unique program structured after the model of a traditional apprenticeship. Students in the Crafts Program undertake a rigorous investigation of their materials in a challenging combination of course work and studio practice that integrates design, craft and fine arts. The Crafts Program has been developed as a one-

year, full time, course of study providing skills and critical theory in support of the student's apprenticeship in the studio of a mentoring craftsperson. Drawing from a rich tradition, students will learn to translate the principles of design and technical merit into a viable and professionally crafted product. Giving expression to a range of experiences, students will leave the program with confidence and the imagination to pursue future craft possibilities.

In the studio of a celebrated local craftsperson, students will develop their personal sensibilities through studying, assisting and pursuing projects of work under the guidance of a mentor. A well-structured program of visual study at the Ottawa School of Art will complement the apprenticeship experience. Students explore art and design with a strong emphasis on drawing, innovation and experimentation. The Crafts Program places importance on a thorough investigation of design, material history and technical approach that aid in the understanding of the interdependence of these areas of study in the completion of student projects.

OSA focuses on history, theory, drawing and experimentation in art and design to prepare students for the opportunity to expand their capabilities over a variety of techniques. Together with OSA program instructors, the mentoring craftsperson provides the necessary technical finesse and production guidance to demonstrate the value of investigating processes and critical enquiry.
